3 Tips to Make Your Daily Commute More Environmentally Friendly

In our busy daily lives, the journey to and from work, school, or errands often feels like a necessary routine. But what if you could also reduce the impact that it has on the planet? At A Greener Future, we believe every small step counts. That's why we've teamed up with our friends at 407 ETR to bring you actionable tips to make your commute more eco-friendly.

Reducing your environmental impact on the road isn't just about grand gestures; it's about smart choices that add up. These include smart route planning, carpooling, and regular vehicle maintenance, which contribute to better outcomes for our wallets, vehicles, and the planet.

1. Smart Route Planning

Traffic congestion and unnecessary idling are not just frustrating; they're significant contributors to fuel waste and harmful emissions. The good news? Technology and a little foresight can make a big difference.

Avoid the Gridlock: Planning your route to bypass peak congestion can drastically cut down on your time spent idling. Less idling means less fuel burned and fewer pollutants released into the air.

The 407 ETR Advantage: For many, taking the 407 ETR offers a more direct and efficient journey. By maintaining consistent speeds and avoiding stop-and-go traffic, you can often achieve better fuel economy and reduce overall emissions compared to slower, more congested routes.

Leverage Technology: Don't just guess! Use navigation apps like Google Maps' "eco-friendly route" option. These tools analyze traffic patterns, road conditions, and even elevation changes to suggest the most fuel-efficient path, saving you both gas and time.

2. Share the Ride, Share the Savings

One of the most impactful ways to reduce your carbon footprint is by reducing the number of cars on the road.

  • Carbon Footprint Reduction: Sharing a ride with colleagues, friends, or family, or opting for public transportation, significantly lowers per-person carbon emissions. Every car taken off the road means less pollution.

  • "Park and Ride" Convenience: Did you know that a robust network of "park and ride" lots exists along 407 ETR routes? These convenient locations allow drivers to seamlessly switch from private vehicles to public transit options to meet up with others for carpooling. It's a win-win for your wallet and the environment.

  • Beyond the Commute: Think beyond your daily work trip. Even for errands or weekend outings, consider if carpooling or public transit could be a viable, greener option, or if you can group all your errands into one outing.

3. A Healthy Car, A Healthier Planet

Your vehicle's condition plays a crucial role in its environmental performance. Regular, proactive maintenance can lead to surprising improvements in fuel efficiency and emission reduction.

Tire Pressure Matters: Properly inflated tires reduce rolling resistance, which means your engine doesn't have to work as hard. This directly translates to better fuel economy as well as reduced wear on your tires. Don’t forget to check your tire pressure regularly!

Timely Oil Changes: Clean oil keeps your engine running smoothly and efficiently. Old, dirty oil forces your engine to work harder, consuming more fuel and increasing emissions. Follow your vehicle's recommended oil change schedule.

Other Key Maintenance: Don't forget air filter replacements, spark plug checks, and engine tune-ups. These small steps ensure your vehicle operates at its optimal performance.

At A Greener Future, we are proud to collaborate with organizations that share our dedication to environmental stewardship. Each year, 407 ETR employees join us to clean up a local park in the Greater Toronto Area, to give back to their communities as part of 407 ETR’s commitment to sustainability and protecting local ecosystems surrounding their highways. Since 2019, they’ve helped to clean up over 36,000 pieces of litter, contributing to our annual Love Your Lakes cleanups and diverting harmful pollution from our environment. Check out our volunteer events to learn more about how you can continue making a difference for the planet while off the road.
