Hamilton Butt Blitz 2024

Hamilton Butt Blitz 2024

Cigarette butts account for 1 in 5 pieces of litter that we find at our cleanups. Cigarette butts are made from 12,000 plastic microfibres called cellulose acetate - which never breaks down in the environment. These microplastics cause harm to our drinking water sources, wildlife, and the health of ecosystems.

A Greener Future and The City of Hamilton Clean and Green Team have joined forces once again to bring you another city-wide Butt Blitz! The social impact of this event is just as important as the environmental impact, as it helps prevent cigarette butt litter from ending up on the ground in the future.

Join us on Friday, April 26 from 10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

We are looking for Butt Blitz Volunteers and local businesses in Hamilton to join us in expanding our impact by participating in a city-wide Butt Blitz on Friday, April 26! Will you join us?

Please note: The Butt Blitz is a 19+ event because we are working with hazardous waste.

FAQ

  • Gloves: Reusable garden or work gloves are great! You may also prefer disposable latex or nylon gloves. An up-cycled container to collect your butts in - a coffee canister, yogurt tub, or tote bag. Hand sanitizer! Litter grabbers are optional.

  • Due to the type of litter being collected, participants must be 19+.

  • Yes! The Butt Blitz is a rain-or-shine event. In the event of severe weather, we will notify participants as soon as possible should we have to postpone or reschedule the event.

  • While the event time is 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM, participants can complete their cigarette litter cleanups for however long they wish between that time frame. Just remember to drop off your collections at the host location before 1 PM to ensure they make it for the final weigh-in.

  • All of the cigarette butts removed from across the city will be counted by A Greener Future staff and will count towards the month-long Butt Blitz program. After the count, the cigarette butts will be shipped to TerraCycle Canada for recycling.

Toronto Butt Blitz 2024

Toronto Butt Blitz 2024

Are you ready to take part in the world’s largest cigarette butt cleanup?

Every single day approximately 1 million cigarette butts are dropped on the ground in the City of Toronto. They contaminate our drinking water, dirty up our parks, and can harm wildlife. They don’t belong in the environment.

As the snow melts away and all the butts are released from their snowbanks we would love to have you join us for a world record-breaking event! In February of 2022 a cleanup in Paris, France resulted in 855,000 butts being picked up in 3 hours. We can beat that, right? Of course we can! Let’s make Toronto shine and send all those butts to be recycled.

The Goal = 1 Million Butts

Let’s kick some butt!

  1. Register as a participant through the form below

  2. Share this web page with a friend and get them to join us

  3. Receive email instructions on April 17, 2024

  4. Participate in the event on Saturday, April 20th, 2023 @ 10 am

*Participants must be 19+ due to the type of waste being handled

DISCLAIMER: The organizers decline any responsibility during this collection. Participation is at the discretion and free will of the participant. This concerns cases of accident, injury, theft, or damage to personal, public or other property occurring during the participation of volunteers.

Canada-Wide Butt Blitz 2024

Are you ready for some spring cleaning?

Cigarette butts account for 1 in 5 pieces of litter found at our cleanups. These small plastic filters are one of the most common forms of litter globally and when not disposed of properly, they cause negative impacts on local ecosystems, wildlife, and human health. Butts do not belong in the environment!

We’re calling on volunteers from across Canada to pick up cigarette butts in their local communities, then send them to TerraCycle Canada for recycling. The social impact of this event is just as important as the environmental impact, as it helps prevent cigarette butt litter from ending up on the ground in the future!

We are looking for Butt Blitz Coordinators and Volunteers in communities across Canada to join us in picking up butts locally throughout the month of April. Join a local team, or take part independently wherever you are!

The Goal = 1 Million Butts
