Laurel McLeod, A Real Premium, 2022. Graphite on paper, 15.5” x 21”

 Description

Using a process-driven approach, often imperceptible details of grain, grooves, speckles, and grime are rendered through the use of graphite on paper in A Real Premium. With the composition made up of two aluminum cans collected in a waterfront litter cleanup, their edges become hazy and blur into the background, creating their own type of topography. It is unclear where the litter and its consequences end and the surrounding environment begins. The result is one that speaks to broader issues of environmental stress due to shoreline pollution in hopes of raising awareness about shoreline protection.
