Circular Economy Month
Every October, Canadians come together to celebrate Circular Economy Month, a national campaign that highlights how we can shift from a traditional “take–make–waste” system toward a more sustainable, circular model. A circular economy keeps materials in use for as long as possible through strategies like reuse, repair, recycling, and redesign, reducing both waste and our demand for new resources. By rethinking how products are made, shared, and consumed, we can lower greenhouse gas emissions, protect ecosystems, and build stronger, more resilient communities.
Throughout the month, individuals, schools, businesses, and municipalities across the country host events and share stories that inspire action. Weekly themes focus on the environmental, social, and economic benefits of circularity, everything from reimagining how we handle food, plastics, textiles, and electronics to exploring ways to share, swap, and repair. The campaign builds on the success of Canada’s long-running Waste Reduction Week and encourages everyone to take practical steps that collectively make a big difference.
At A Greener Future, we’re proud to support Circular Economy Month by hosting cleanups, sharing resources, and sparking conversations about how each of us can take part. Whether you choose to bring items to a repair café, reduce single-use plastics, or join one of our shoreline cleanups, you’re contributing to a healthier environment and a future where nothing goes to waste. Together, we can create a circular economy that works for people and the planet.

Join the hunt to protect Lake Ontario from microplastic pollution!
A Greener Future proudly presents our Nurdle Hunt program in partnership with the Great Global Nurdle Hunt. Venture with us to the stunning shores of Lake Ontario for a crucial endeavour in environmental conservation. Tiny plastic pellets, called nurdles, are one of the most widespread forms of plastic pollution. They’re small, but they add up fast, and they’re harming our wildlife and waterways. By joining this Nurdle Hunt, you’ll become part of a global movement to track, collect, and remove nurdles before they do more damage. Together, we can protect Lake Ontario for the benefit of people, wildlife, and future generations. 🌊

Nurdles are tiny plastic pellets, often no larger than a lentil, used as raw materials in the production of plastic products. Due to their size and buoyancy, they're easily dispersed and can be found littered along beaches worldwide. These seemingly innocuous pellets pose a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems, as they can be mistaken for food by aquatic life, leading to ingestion and entanglement. By removing nurdles from our shores, we're safeguarding the delicate balance of Lake Ontario's ecosystem.

Lake Ontario serves as a vital source of freshwater for millions of people and a habitat for diverse aquatic life. Yet, plastic pollution threatens its health and biodiversity. By participating in the Nurdle Hunt, you're directly contributing to the preservation of this precious ecosystem and mitigating the harmful impacts of plastic pollution on people and animals. Each nurdle we remove is one less piece of plastic eaten by fish or contaminating our drinking water. Plus, the data you collect contributes to international research efforts to stop nurdle pollution at its source.

CANCELLED: Harbour, Beach and Brook Creek Outfall, Cobourg
Join the hunt to protect Lake Ontario from microplastic pollution!
CANCELLED DUE TO UNEXPECTED CIRCUMSTANCES
A Greener Future proudly presents Cobourg's first-ever Nurdle Hunt! This special event, hosted in partnership with the Town of Cobourg, will take participants on a tour across three local waterfront locations to learn about and take action on one of the most overlooked forms of plastic pollution - nurdles.
Nurdles, small plastic pellets used to make most plastic products, are the second largest source of primary microplastic pollution worldwide. We've found early signs of pollution along our beautiful shores, which is why now is the perfect time to act, raise awareness, and prevent the issue from growing. They may be tiny, but their negative impact on our waterways and wildlife is drastic. By joining the hunt, you’ll become part of a global movement to track, collect, and remove nurdles before they do more damage.
During this hands-on event, participants will:
Visit multiple local sites where nurdles have been found
Learn how to identify and collect nurdles safely & effectively
Discover how nurdles end up in the environment and why this pollution matters
Contribute to global data collection efforts that hold the plastics industry accountable
Join us for this unique experience and help keep Cobourg’s shores clean, healthy, and nurdle-free! 💚
📍 Meeting Spot: North of the Oval on Albert Street, Parking in the Second Street Lot is FREE! (Google Map)
The tour will start at the Second Street Parking Lot, followed by a short walk to the Cobourg Harbour for stop number 1. Stop number 2 is at Victoria Park, a 7-minute walk from the Harbour. From there, we’ll head back to the parking lot and drive to stop number 3, Brook Creek Outfall. Carpooling is available.
Wear your walking shoes and be prepared for an eye-opening experience, great conversations, and a new way to help protect our planet. To register, please reply to this email with the names of the attendees.

Waste Reduction Week
For more than 20 years, Canadians have celebrated Waste Reduction Week, a national campaign that highlights the importance of sustainable consumption and responsible waste management. Taking place this year from October 20–26, 2025, the week encourages individuals, schools, businesses, and municipalities to reflect on their habits and take action to reduce waste in everyday life.
Each day of the campaign spotlights a different theme, such as plastics, textiles, e-waste, and food waste, showing how small changes can add up to a big impact. From repair cafés and swap events to shoreline cleanups and community workshops, Waste Reduction Week brings people together to learn, share, and take meaningful steps toward a less wasteful future.
At A Greener Future, we see Waste Reduction Week as a chance to celebrate the progress we’ve made and inspire even more action. Through our cleanups, data collection, and awareness campaigns, we’re proud to play a role in reducing waste and protecting the Great Lakes. By joining an event or taking simple actions at home, like refusing single-use items, repairing what you can, or choosing secondhand, you’re helping build a culture of conservation that benefits both people and the planet.

-
Lake Ontario serves as a vital source of freshwater for millions of people and a habitat for diverse aquatic life.

UNSMOKE Butt Blitz Vancouver
This is it, Vancouver.
Join us for Canada’s biggest cigarette litter cleanup – right here in the City of Vancouver.
On September 20th, A Greener Future is teaming up with UNSMOKE to host a massive cleanup event at the 800 Robson Plaza next to the Vancouver Art Gallery as part of a national campaign to collect 1 million cigarette butts in just one month. We’re calling on Vancouverites to help us make a visible, unforgettable impact on World Cleanup Day.
Whether you’re an environmentalist, activist, community builder, or someone who just wants to make a difference — this is your moment.
How It Works
Sign up below through our form.
Show up at 800 Robson Plaza anytime between 10 AM–2 PM on Sept 20.
Check-in through the QR code on-site.
Pick up cigarette butts in the surrounding area OR drop off butts you already collected at our collection point — look for the UNSMOKE flags and our epic butt collection display.
Be part of something big. Watch our social media (or the news) to see how we did!
We’ll be tracking how many butts we collect by weight and volume, and we want your contribution counted. Our goal is a national total of 1 million butts in September, and it starts here.
Why It Matters
Cigarette butts are one of the most littered items on Earth — and they’re toxic to our soil, waterways, wildlife, and us. Every butt you pick up helps protect our environment and sends a clear message: We’re done with this kind of pollution.
This event is about more than just cleaning up. It’s about community power, environmental action, and proving what’s possible when people come together for a common cause.
What to Expect
✅ Drop in anytime from 10 AM–2 PM
✅ Meet fellow change-makers and environmental advocates
✅ Snap photos with our butt display
✅ Media presence, music, and good vibes
✅ A chance to make a real, tangible impact on your city
